TGH Helps Miracle of Help Get New Vehicle for their Clinic

One of the most important roles of a global health network is creating bridges—between organizations, clinicians, and the vital resources that make programs possible. The Together for Global Health network exists for this very purpose: to connect organizations with the expertise and support they need to navigate challenges and maximize impact. Time and again, these connections have helped organizations overcome obstacles that might otherwise have stalled their work.

When Miracle of Help reached out to see if anyone in the network knew of any organizations with experience clearing shipments at the port in Sierra Leone, the Christian Health Association of Sierra Leone (CHASL) immediately came to mind. CHASL, a longtime supporter of healthcare initiatives in the country, often assists other TGH members with precisely this type of work. Their team eagerly stepped in to support Miracle of Help, providing expert guidance and top-notch service that ensured the shipment (which included a new truck to support clinic operations) was cleared on time and without additional fees.

A recent reflection from Miracle of Help illustrates just how powerful this collaboration can be. In their words:

“Yasmine Vaughan and Together for Global Health has been an invaluable resource for Miracle of Help. The Tuesday meetings are informative and helpful in navigating the challenges of working as a non-profit, and have connected us with many knowledgeable resources and clinicians. Yasmine shares her expertise and experience generously and is always available by phone, text or e-mail. Most recently Yasmine was able to recommend a clearing agent for a shipment that included a truck and construction materials, that would have been charged hefty taxes and duty fees, as well as storage and demurrage if shipment had not been promptly cleared through the port. To our great delight and deep gratitude- the shipment and truck cleared safely and quickly, and got delivered to our office without any issues. We are lucky to have been introduced by the Healey organization to this wonderful organization- and it’s outstanding Director- Yasmine Vaughan! Three cheers!

This kind of support is no small matter. Shipping items to international ports—especially large equipment like vehicles—can be a complicated process. Without a knowledgeable clearing agent, organizations can face costly taxes, hefty duty fees, and additional charges for storage or demurrage if a shipment is delayed. For nonprofits already working with limited resources, such setbacks can create significant financial strain and slow down vital projects.

Together for Global Health not only helps organizations anticipate and navigate these challenges but also demonstrates how collaboration multiplies impact. By fostering connections across its network—whether through weekly meetings, shared expertise, or strategic introductions—the network ensures that no organization has to face these obstacles alone. The success of Miracle of Help’s shipment is just one example of how collaboration saves resources, strengthens partnerships, and accelerates the work of improving global health.

Message from Miracle of Help Director Risa Gold on the container’s departure: “Our 40 foot container is locked and loaded! With the expert help of Carlos, Eddie, Raoul and driver Jesus we got the donated Dodge Ram onto the container and all the donated construction materials packed safely behind it. It is heading to the port today and sails for SL 6/26. Expected arrival is 7/26. Wishing our shipment fair winds!”

At its heart, Together for Global Health exists to ensure that organizations working in complex settings like Sierra Leone have the connections and support they need. Not every nonprofit has access to specialized expertise, but through this network, they can tap into the knowledge and generosity of others. It’s a living example of what can happen when collaboration is priortized and valued.
