Rural HealthCare Initiative

Country: Sierra Leone

Mission: The mission of Rural Health Care Initiative is to partner with rural communities in Sierra Leone to rebuild healthcare systems and to overcome one of the world’s highest maternal and child mortality rates.

Vision: The vision of Rural Health Care Initiative is to create a healthier and more resilient rural Sierra Leone where women and children have access to quality healthcare, leading to improved health outcomes and community well-being.

Focus Areas: Rural Health Care Initiative focuses on maternal and child health, providing sustainable healthcare access in rural communities, community empowerment through education, nutrition and wellness programs, and healthcare infrastructure development.

Program Summary: Rural Health Care Initiative addresses the severe health disparities in rural Sierra
Leone through several key programs. These include operating two maternity
waiting homes to provide access to safe childbirth for women in remote areas,
offering nutritional programs and medical services at mobile outreach clinics in
16 villages to improve child and maternal health, and collaborating with communities
to enhance healthcare delivery.
In addition to providing transportation services for healthcare, a newborn nurse
home visit program, a vaccine update program, and services to reduce and treat
malaria have been introduced in recent years. A food security program provides
training and support for farmers. RHCI aims to reduce maternal and child mortality
and empower local communities in Sierra Leone to take control of their health by
developing healthcare infrastructure and community-based services.
