Vision: To empower indigenous Maya midwives in Guatemala by promoting local control, long-term commitment, and sustainable solutions to improve maternal health in their communities.
Focus Areas: Midwifery support, maternal and child health, local policy advocacy, education, economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and addressing barriers to healthcare.
Program Summary: Maya Midwifery International (MMI) partners with the Association of Midwives of the Mam Speaking Area (ACAM), which works with over 40 Maya midwives in rural Guatemala. Since 1999, MMI has focused on empowering midwives through training, advocacy, and the provision of essential resources. The organization addresses barriers such as lack of payment for services, limited access to medical supplies, and poor transportation. MMI also focuses on preserving traditional midwifery practices while introducing new strategies to reduce maternal and infant mortality. The initiative aims to give midwives a stronger voice in the healthcare system, advocate for sustainable practices, and promote education and economic support within their communities.
